Booker Prize 2023 naar Paul Lynch
27 november 2023Paul Lynch heeft de Booker Prize for Fiction 2023 toegekend gekregen voor zijn roman Prophet Song, een ‘triumph of emotional storytelling’ volgens de jury. Dat werd gisteravond laat bekendgemaakt.
De jury:
‘From that first knock at the door, Prophet Song forces us out of our complacency as we follow the terrifying plight of a woman seeking to protect her family in an Ireland descending into totalitarianism. We felt unsettled from the start, submerged in – and haunted by – the sustained claustrophobia of Lynch’s powerfully constructed world. He flinches from nothing, depicting the reality of state violence and displacement and offering no easy consolations. Here the sentence is stretched to its limits – Lynch pulls off feats of language that are stunning to witness. He has the heart of a poet, using repetition and recurring motifs to create a visceral reading experience. This is a triumph of emotional storytelling, bracing and brave. With great vividness, Prophet Song captures the social and political anxieties of our current moment. Readers will find it soul-shattering and true, and will not soon forget its warnings.’
Het was een shortlist zonder oud-genomineerden (Sebastian Barry en Tan Twan Eng vielen af), en met twee debutanten (Escoffery, Maroo). Ongemakkelijker: waarbij de longlist op gender net niet 50-50 was, domineren nu de Pauls en één John. En naast twee Ieren, twee Amerikanen en een Canadees is er maar één Britse kanshebber: Chetna Maroo. En Nederlanders hebben ook wat te klagen: alleen Hardings boek is vertaald.

De Booker Prize werd voor het eerst uitgereikt in 1969 en is sindsdien uitgegroeid tot de bekendste literaire prijs voor Engelstalige literatuur. Eerder wonnen onder anderen Shehan Karunatilaka (2022), Damon Galgut (2021), Douglas Stuart (2020), Margaret Atwood (2019), Bernardine Evaristo (2019), Anna Burns (2018), George Saunders (2017), Paul Beatty (2016), en Marlon James (2015) de prijs.
