Spreken over moederschap als iets anders dan een rooskleurige droom is nog altijd grotendeels taboe. Dat terwijl wetenschappelijk onderzoek toont dat behalve de puberteit geen periode in het leven zulke dramatische veranderingen met zich meebrengt als de zwangerschap, de bevalling en het prille moederschap. Aan de hand van nieuw onderzoek uit verschillende hoeken – neurowetenschap, biologie, psychologie, sociologie – laat Jones zien hoe de veranderingen in de hersenen en de rest van het lichaam van de moeder veel diepgaander, wilder en langduriger zijn dan we dachten.

Kom langs voor een gesprek over woede, sociale isolatie, biologie en een meer rechtvaardige samenleving. Deze avond vieren we ook de verschijning van de Nederlandse vertaling van Jones haar nieuwe boek Matrescence (Moederteit). Deze avond wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Uitgeverij Nieuwezijds.

Daan Borrel schrijft essays, proza en theater. Eerder schreef zij 'Soms is liefde dit', een essay over verlangen en seksualiteit en Jaar van het nieuwe verhaal, waarin zij de menstruatiecyclus laat leiden tot een nieuwe betekenis van tijd, intimiteit en liefde. Haar romandebuut De dragers verschijnt in 2024, evenals het boek Baren buiten de box van Bahareh Goodarzi waarvoor Borrel de interviews verzorgde.

Join Athenaeum Bookstore Spui, on Thursday 16 May at 19:30, for a new edition of Athenaeum Verdiept. Guest is British science journalist Lucy Jones, who will talk to author Daan Borrel about the impact of pregnancy, childbirth and maternity, about pink clouds and their absence.

Talking about motherhood as anything other than a rosy dream is still largely taboo. This is despite scientific research showing that apart from puberty, no period in life brings such dramatic changes as pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. Drawing on new research from various angles - neuroscience, biology, psychology, sociology - Jones shows how the changes in the brain and the rest of the mother's body are much deeper, wilder and longer-lasting than we thought.

Join us for a conversation about anger, social isolation, biology and a more just society. This evening we will also celebrate the release of the Dutch translation of Jones's new book Matrescence (Moederteit). This evening is organised in collaboration with the Dutch publisher: Uitgeverij Nieuwezijds.
