J.M. Coetzee en Elizabeth Strout op longlist Man Booker Prize
27 juli 2016Onder anderen J.M. Coetzee, A.L. Kennedy en Elizabeth Strout staan op de longlist voor de Man Booker Prize 2016. Dat werd zojuist bekendgemaakt.
De Man Booker Prize werd voor het eerst uitgereikt in 1969 en is sindsdien uitgegroeid tot de bekendste literaire prijs voor Engelstalige literatuur. Eerder wonnen onder anderen Marlon James (2015), Richard Flanagan (2014), Eleanor Catton (2013), Hilary Mantel (2012, 2009), Julian Barnes (2011) en Ian McEwan (1998) de prijs.
De jury:
‘This is a very exciting year. The range of books is broad and the quality extremely high. Each novel provoked intense discussion and, at times, passionate debate, challenging our expectations of what a novel is and can be...From the historical to the contemporary, the satirical to the polemical, the novels in this list come from both established writers and new voices. The writing is uniformly fresh, energetic and important. It is a longlist to be relished.’
Met vijf Amerikaanse auteurs, twee Canadezen en een Zuid-Afrikaanse Australiër, een tweevoudig winnaar (Coetzee), een auteur die eerder werd genomineerd (Levy), vier debutanten (Means, Menmuir, Moshfegh, Reeves) en vooralsnog vijf titels die vertaling verschijnen (Strout, Coetzee in augustus, Reeves, Moshfegh en Szalay later), is dit de longlist, of Booker dozen:
