About Strangers to Ourselves
How do we understand ourselves in periods of crisis and distress? Such moments – familiar to any life – often create tension between our own sense of self and how the rest of the world sees us. New Yorker staff writer Rachel Aviv, author of Strangers to Ourselves, had her first brush with how people perceive mental health and wellbeing when she was diagnosed with anorexia as a young child. Rachel Aviv is a staff writer at the New Yorker. Strangers to Ourselves is her debut book and was named by the New York Times as one of the 10 best books of 2022. The book was also a finalist for the 2023 National Book Critics Circle award in criticism.
Over Vreemden voor onszelf
Vreemden voor onszelf volgt mensen met een stoornis die tegen de grenzen van psychiatrische verklaringen aanlopen. Hun diagnose geeft hun ervaringen een naam, maar drukt ook een stempel op hun identiteit en positie in de maatschappij. Met een scherp oog voor sociale en culturele factoren beschrijft Aviv onder meer een Indiase vrouw die haar toevlucht zoekt in religie, een Amerikaanse vrouw die herstelt van een psychose en hoopt de liefde van haar kinderen te herwinnen, een man die het tot zijn levensdoel heeft gemaakt wraak te nemen op zijn psychoanalytici en een jonge vrouw die na tien jaar besluit te stoppen met medicatie omdat ze niet weet wie ze is zonder. Mede door haar eigen ervaring is Aviv in staat nieuwe vensters te openen in ons denken over psychische stoornissen.

Rachel Aviv is verbonden aan The New Yorker. In 2020 won ze de Whiting Award voor creatieve non-fictie. Vreemden voor onszelf is haar debuut. Het werd door velen uitgeroepen tot een van de beste boeken van 2022.
