The Plant #9: Bowie flower arrangements, dandelion paperweights and floral ice-cream

12 augustus 2016, Door: Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum

The Plant is a majestic sort of magazine: it’s an epitome of the coming together of mankind and plants of every sort, size and shape. It celebrates the art of nature, man-made or wild, the power of plants, edible or poisonous, and the beauty of all of these in relationship to one another. More than a simple collection of fantastic photography on botanical shapes, discoveries and beauty printed on various kinds of paper in a timeless coffee table magazine, The Plant opens the door to new ways of looking at nature. Each issue is graced by countless creatives that work amidst, with or by nature that opens the reader’s eyes to new perspectives. Moreover, each issue is themed by a specific plant – an exercise that entices countless international photographers, artists, designers, and musicians to tackle the beauty, properties and various elements of that one specific plant. Finally, each issue is held together by the personal experiences and intimate relations of everyone featured. It’s a cozy kind of magazine.

Interview with Winter Vandenbrink from Collection Of Documentaries

23 juli 2016, Door: Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum

Collection of Documentaries captures British youth culture and are comparable to Masses, Dust and LAW. The magazine has no online presence. Issue three just came out. We met the editors in the shop and asked Winter Vandenbrink some questions about his publication.

Kinfolk: #20 The Travel Issue

24 juni 2016, Door: Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum

The introduction of the issue says things like' things change within us when we travel'. Has Kinfolk itself changed during the 20-issues-journey? Or has the concept become too familiar to inspire or shock us? Now, Kinfolk was never made to shock; it's all too beautiful and harmonious for that. But inspire; yes, they do it again. Although the whole community-feeling -which was quite outspoken when Kinfolk started- seems to have bleakened a little bit, the conscious lifestyle they portrait is still vivid.

Pallet Magazine: Only Interested in Everything

01 juni 2016, Door: Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum

So here’s what you know: beer is very cool at the moment. Small independent breweries seem to be sprouting up like weeds around every street corner, in every abandoned warehouse across town, in the back of huge food trucks, in your best friend’s spare bedroom – all causing a chain reaction of smiles, high bills and ridiculous headaches. Every beer is better than the last, I.P.A’s are the coolest thing since the Spice Girls, and bottle art is becoming punkier than the 90s sticker revolution. And beer, in every shape and form, is, of course, for men and their constant battle in the race for masculinity. Or is it? Insert Pallet magazine, only interested in everything, here: where we might sound skeptical, biased and on the fence about beer as a trend and core subject of a magazine, we believe Pallet is one of the coolest new independents to hit the scene. And trust us, we enjoy a good I.P.A., no stress.

Lunch Lady #2: Coloured Turbulence

25 mei 2016, Door: Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum

The first thing that strikes us, reading brand new magazine Lunch Lady, is that it seems to be made specifically by the very same people the magazine targets: mothers of all ages with kids dealing with lunch, dinner and the rest of everyday life. It’s not made by a team of marketing people selling a magazine to a specific audience, quite the contrary, the makers are their own market and they know exactly who they’re talking to.
